Top Ten – Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference
Top Ten Things to Remember when attending the Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference
1. There is no right way to be trans.
2. It’s ok to take a time-out.
3. No one expects you to know everything.
4. It’s not a competition.
5. Respect your elders. And your youth. And everyone in between.
6. It’s ok to disagree.
7. There are many different transgender communities. Here’s a chance to find some of the ones you connect with!
8. Discounted meals are located off-site, but near-by. Make sure to check out the Program.
9. If you have them, bring cards with your contact info on them. There may be people you don’t get a chance to talk to but want to later!
10. There’s not one way to be trans! Oh – did I already say that? Well – it’s worth repeating. Trans folks come from all economic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, genders and experiences! Gathering a diverse group of people with similar identities can be at the same time exciting and difficult. After all, after you have spent time figuring out your own stuff, it can be easy to assume that others have had the same experience. This is an opportunity to both speak-up and to sit back and listen.
It’s that time of year again:Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference
This year’s conference is organized differently than past conferences. Instead of a separate “Providers Day”, provider focused workshops are mixed in with workshops developed for trans folks and their communities. Additionally there are multiple spaces set aside for community building and several evening activities including “Between the Lines”, An Open Mic.
On their website, www.trans-health.org, you can see a copy of the schedule, information on the keynotes, and bios of the presenters including myself. This conference is a great opportunity to access information and to meet other people, it can be a powerful and empowering experience!
